Guts! The Little Sisters Take on Big Brother

It used to be that picking on helpless unborn babies was the thing that exposed Barack Obama’s despicable nature, but now America can add this to his list of cruelties: targeting a group of Catholic nuns that care for the elderly poor.

America’s exceedingly secular president is of the opinion that compliance with social issues takes precedence over devotion to God – so much so that he is wholeheartedly dedicated to hindering, by any means necessary, religious vocations.

Clearly, caring for the group the president claims he’s tremendously concerned about doesn’t earn selfless caretakers any points with him. That is especially true if, rather than government largesse, the reason for looking after the aged and vulnerable is rooted solely in obedience to God.

Barack Obama wouldn’t want God, or worse yet, a convent full of women, to get credit for what he thinks was his idea.

That’s why Obama is involved in a scuffle with a group of nuns who call themselves the Little Sisters of the Poor. This religious order was birthed in 1839 by Mother Marie of the Cross, who came to be known as St. Jeanne Jugan. The French saint is described as “a friend of God and a hero for the poor.”

You remember the poor – that’s the crowd President Obama exploits whenever it benefits him politically.

Barack Obama is demanding that the nuns, who consider themselves “duty bound to protect against any attacks on human life”, acquiesce to his contraceptive mandate and offer coverage that encroaches upon their foundational pro-life principles.

Part of the Little Sisters’ VISION:

[i]s to contribute to the Culture of Life by nurturing communities where each person is valued, the solidarity of the human family and the wisdom of age are celebrated, and the compassionate love of Christ is shared with all.

Let’s face it; Barack Obama cares little about all that “Culture of Life” crap. His VISION is to coerce America into accepting his radical birth control and abortion policy agenda, and to accomplish this he’ll make an example out of anyone who dares place God before government – even nuns.

Meanwhile, the Little Sisters fulfill the mission the president claims is his. The difference between them and him is that these women choose to do it selflessly and without monetary or political recompense.

At any rate, judging from Obama’s treatment of the small group of nuns, it wouldn’t matter if it was Mother Teresa of Calcutta he was dealing with, he’d still demand that before tending to the poor, her first priority should be yielding to his diktats.

Mark Rienzi is a lawyer for the Becket Fund for Liberty, one of the groups representing the nuns. Rienzi addressed the president’s defiant refusal to compromise on the contraceptive mandate, saying:

The Obama administration seems to be handing out exemptions to its friends every five minutes. It seems only fair that the Little Sisters not be bullied into violating their consciences or paying fines they can’t affor[d].

The threat is if the noncompliant nunnery doesn’t submit and provide contraceptive mandate-amenable health insurance for the employees who work in their Denver based facility, fines could run the nuns $6,700 per day.

In Obama’s mind, slapping God-fearing convent dwellers who took a “vow of chastity, poverty and obedience” with a millions-of-dollars per-year punishment for refusing to provide insurance that covers contraceptives would certainly drive home the point to this rebellious bunch, as well as America, that he’s the boss.

Think of it – Obama’s conscience is such that he believes it’s his duty to extend generosity toward America’s sexually active women. It’s of the utmost importance to the president that women can copulate without the worry of being “punished with a baby” (which the nuns would gladly care for).

So dedicated is he to the idea of consequence-free sex that he’s willing to violate the basic tenets of the First Amendment and oppress a celibate group of nuns to prove his point.

The problem is that these feisty religious women are defiant; and rather than defy God, if need be they would probably be willing to live out the rest of their days within the confines of a jail cell, to prove an eternal point.

That kind of insolent attitude is why the president took the fight to his friends in the US Supreme Court. Barack Obama’s argument is that these women, who’ve devoted the whole of their lives in service to God and others, because they minister to all religions, aren’t really religious enough to qualify for the church exemption.

However, one thing Barack Obama didn’t count on was his Roman Catholic, parochial school-educated Supreme Court appointee, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, issuing a ruling ordering the Obama administration to abstain from imposing such a preposterous order on the Little Sisters.

So bring it on, Barack, because Sotomayor’s New Year’s Eve order upholds what St. Jeanne Jugan once said: “If God is with us, it will be accomplished … God will help us; the work is His.”

What the president, a man who obviously is convinced he is a god, is about to find out is that his battle is not with a group of vulnerable nuns; it’s with El Gibbor the Mighty warrior who, on behalf of the Little Sisters, will do battle against Barack Obama, and prevail.
