Gone are the days of Bloomberg mandates for less salt and smaller sodas.
Also gone is a mayor with embarrassing Spanish-language skills. The Big Apple has a new mayor, Hizzoner Bill de Blasio, who can not only Smackdown Dance, but right out of the chute is flexing his progressive muscle by turning what was once a “Tale of Two Cities” into a religiously equitable place.
It began when Bill sent a level-the-playing-field message to the Upper East Side by making rich people wait to get “obnoxious snow” plowed from their streets. Now, the mayor has a new issue. This time, he’s furthering political correctness by giving religious deference to Muslims.
In an effort to foster fairness, the mayor wants to close NYC public schools for two Muslim holidays and the Lunar New Year. Unimpressed that Michelle ‘Bollywood’ Obama likes to drag out her sari and show off her Indian dance moves for Diwali, Mr. de Blasio remains unsure as to whether school should also be closed for the Hindu festival.
Diwali Day or no Diwali Day, in New York City the public schools are committed to enforcing ‘separation of church and state.’ The way to do it is to take special care not to tie Christ to Christmas and to keep Jesus and His resurrection far away as humanly possible from the Easter baskets, chocolate bunnies, and Cadbury Creme Eggs .
It will be interesting to see if the Great Equalizer de Blasio, in the run-up to the Islamic holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, will attempt to level the religious playing field like he leveled the snow-plowing situation in New York City, by granting special dispensation for Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh to be tied to the Muslim holidays in NYC public schools.
