On the Monday following Easter, a relaxed President Obama dressed in khaki pants, rolled-up shirt sleeves and shiny brown wingtip shoes, together with wife Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, mother-in-law Marian Robinson, and family dog Bo, took to the White House South Portico balcony. The Obama family warmly welcomed 30,000 adults and children and encouraged them all to enjoy the bunny and egg festivities.
Glancing over at his wife, Obama said “My job is very simple, it is to introduce the powerhouse of the White House,” First Lady Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama responded demurely, saying, “Thank you, honey.” Then, the demure ‘powerhouse’ warned Barack that if he had any competitive inclinations about “beat[ing] a three-year-old” in the egg roll, he had better suppress the urge.
Then, in honor of the holiest Christian holiday, Michelle exhorted the gathering by screaming “Let’s Go, Let’s Play, Let’s Move,” which sounded a bit like “Please Go, Don’t Stay, Please Move,” three suggestions many strongly believe Mr. Obama should heed.
Attending the Easter event were characters from Sesame Street, including the famous Elmo. A group of celebrity chefs conducted cooking demonstrations at the Play with Your Food Station — which makes one breathe a sigh of relief that former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders wasn’t one of the station organizers.
Although the Easter Egg Roll did not literally feature ‘egg rolls,’ Mrs. Obama did “cook shrimp and vegetable tacos with Marcus Samuelsson, the chef/owner of Red Rooster Harlem, and Today show’s Al [Gastric Bypass] Roker.”
Musical guests included Obama-hugger Janelle Monae and 14-year-old “X Factor” singing sensation Rachel Crow. Little Rachel belted out the National Anthem while the Easter Bunny, Barack, Michelle, and Sasha amazed everyone by appropriately covering their hearts with the correct hand.
Among the athletes at in the Eggtivity Zone were “Dominique Dawes, Michelle Kwan…and four members of the Harlem Globetrotters,” who played “Shoot for Strength” with taxpayer-funded basketballs emblazoned with Barack Obama’s face.
Besides cheering on the egg-rollers, Michelle and Barry took pictures with guests, generously choosing not to charge their usual $10K a shot. The first couple also listened to daughters Sasha and Malia make “rare public remarks” in a reading of what could be interpreted as a child’s ode to unionized sick leave, Phillip C. Stead’s “A Sick Day for Amos McGee.”
The political “king of all wild things,” mischief-maker Barack Obama, sans his wolf suit and accompanied by a howling Bo, “encouraged guests to [also] make animal noises” while, in preparation for the Democratic Convention, he read from “Where the Wild Things Are,” by Maurice Sendak.
Movie actress Julianne Moore, who takes pride in her biased misrepresentation of Sarah Palin in the HBO movie “Game Change,” participated in book readings at the Story Time Stage. Julie and a deaf interpreter read a book Moore wrote about a redheaded little girl like herself entitled “Freckle Face Strawberry.”
Sorry to say, but there is just something off-putting about a liberal, pro-choice activist/Planned Parenthood fundraiser reading a children’s book to little kids who, five years prior, she would have heartily approved of aborting.
With that in mind, and with the South Lawn teeming with mothers who exercised their reproductive rights along with the President surrounded by unfertilized eggs and rabbits, an obvious opportunity presented itself and was missed. If pro-choice Barack Obama had given it some forethought and wasn’t so focused on forcing himself to let a child win the egg roll, he might have seized the eggs-and-kids moment and, in honor of Easter, topped off the holy day with a rehash of the Republican Party’s so-called “war on women.”
